China discovers bugging devices in US-built plane for President
Intelligence officers in China have reportedly found more than 20 bugging
devices inside a jetliner built in the United States for President Jiang
Zemin.

A top-level inquiry is now under way in both countries.

The London-based Financial Times is reporting that 27 listening devices were
uncovered after the Boeing 767 had been delivered to Beijing from the US.

According to the paper, the plane was searched and the bugs found after
onboard crew had complained of strange static emanating from the upholstery
during a test flight late last year.

The devices were apparently highly sophisticated satellite-controlled
monitors.

One was found in the presidential lavatory, another in the headboard of a
bed.

President Jiang is reported to be furious at the discovery, and up to 20
Chinese Air Force officers who monitored the plane's construction and fitout
have been detained while an investigation is carried out.

Executives with Boeing reportedly know nothing. Just year the company won a
$2 billion order for new aircraft during President Bush's visit to China
last October.
