  In Vietnam helos were damaged, and occasionally brought down, by 7.62x39 Pact fire from AK-47s; the Blackhawk and Apatche have bellies armored to take up to 23mm. When I was in, they covered small arms versus aircraft, but its stated intent was to throw off the pilot/gunners aim; even though the chance of shooting them down was nil, a hail of gunfire would certain affect pilot performance. We were told that anything flying higher than 400' was a waste of time. At less than 400 feet, we were told to 'lead' at least 100 yards, up to 300 for jets.
