It is unfortunate that we have to start from scratch in this manner, but Tom Comeau did not respond in any way to our requests and we did not want to see The CZ die. I'm going to try to retain as much of the old format as possible. Please take note of the new address for submissions and administration requests. These may change again in the future as I am attempting to get the CZ set up as a listserve digest. Stay tuned for more news. A few notes on submissions. I will not do any editing or spell checking of your submissions(I have enough problems with my own spelling). They will most likely just be cut and pasted in as I receive them. As for a publishing schedule, I'm not sure how often the CZ will be published, I'll see what the volume is like at first. Like I said, I'll see what the volume of messages is like. Thanks to every one who helped to get The CZ up off the ground again and keep the submissions coming so I have something to publish. I hope every one had a happy holiday. Gene Lots of new members. Modernization Reductions to 96 Defense Budget Announced WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Secretary of Defense William Perry announced several changes in Department of Defense modernization programs Dec. 9, that will allow $8 billion to be shifted to higher priority programs affecting military pay, readiness and quality of life. ...... ..... The Department will change seven modernization programs, including these of special interest to the Navy and Marine Corps: - Cancel the Tri-Service Stand-off Attack Missile (TSSAM). (FY 1996 savings: $2.1 billion) - Reduce procurement of DDG-51 Aegis destroyers from 18 to 16 in the FY 1996-2001 period. (FY 1996 savings: $1.5 billion) - Schedule the New Attack Submarine to produce one submarine in FY 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002. The submarine produced in FY96 will be a Seawolf, the New Attack Submarine will begin in 1998. (FY 1996 savings: $1.5 billion) - Commit to production of the V-22 Osprey to fill both the Marine Corps and Special Operations Forces medium lift requirements. (FY 1996 savings: $0.1 billion) - Delay development of the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) by two years. (FY 1996 savings: $0.2 billion) These reductions were less than would have been required before the President initiated the $25 billion increase in the defense budget. This added funding allowed the department to meet the President's directive to ensure that pay, readiness and quality of life were fully funded without major modernization reductions. As the '486 is the current standard PC, the Harpoon designers of course used these resources to make the game as realistic as possible, one of the prime goals of Harpoon. I have played a little on my old '386 and found it to be very difficult to play. Mouse response is terrible. I have not had any crashes though. I imagine that the game would be just Ok even on a '486 and really needs a pentium to do well. The trend for many games is towards a requirement for a pentium due to the increasing complexity. The solution to the problem is to quit moaning and go ahead and upgrade to the pentium (you really want it anyway). My initial impression is that the game is much better than the original Harpoon. BTW, Harpoon I is now available on CD-ROM and includes all scenarios, the editor and a slightly upgraded game engine. This is a real convenience since it eliminates all those floppies... Do you know of any fix that is >availble? I believe this is either an out of memory or out of handles error (though the out of handles is more rare with Classic). When I run any of my iterations of Harpoon I usually use F8 when DOS boots up and eliminate as many drivers and TSRs as possible. Since I am not particularly fond of the Harpoon I sounds I don't load my sound drivers. I usually only load HIMEM.SYS, EMM386.EXE, the mouse drivers and SMARTDRV.EXE. This usually leaves a fair amount of memory for the game. If you start getting out of handles errors you can put a /H:=xxx in your config.sys EMM386 line. I've got mine set for 128 right now. Larry ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Jan 95 08:44:55 cst From: CNCALD@ccmail.monsanto.com Subject: (13) Harpoon for Windows 1.53 Harpoon Classic for Windows (1.53) There were a lot of questions in the first issue of CV about the new Harpoon Classic. I see that those who are responsible for this new version are on the mailing list, so Jay, Gordon, if I make a mistake feel free to correct it. Let's see what I can come up with as far as a FAQ list here: First my qualifications. As a registered Harpoon owner I received the postcard offering the $25 upgrade mentioned in RCV1 (Revived Convergence Zone Issue #1). There is a DOS and Windows version, on disk and on CD-ROM (Windows may be CD-ROM only, I'm not certain). I called to inquire about the new versions, found out that the Windows version was not yet ready for shipping, and to make a long story short, became a Beta Tester and eventiually owner for that Windows Version. Alliance Interactive has taken over the code-base for Harpoon classic from 360. They already have an excellent record for proactive support for bug fixes, and it is very exciting to talk with them because they are very committed to this product. The CD-ROM version will run off of the CD, so you can install only 2 MB on your hard drive if you so choose (but the scenario editor takes up a lot of space if you choose to install it). This is a nice feature as far as I am concerned! Features: * New Battleset, plus all battlesets released so far, and scenario editor. (300+ scenarios). * Air-to-air refueling is supported. (Finally!) * Improved sonar algorithms. * Improved look with on-screen buttons for common tasks(Attack,Set course, etc) * New ships, aircraft. * Nice sound effects. * My version of Harpoon used to show the ship animation firing 30 missiles if you fired 30 missiles from one ship. Now you see one animation of a missile being fired for each target. So you can leave your animations on, fire 30 Tomahawks at Baghdad, and not have to wait an hour watching 30 missile launch animations. This is not just a re-release--you do get some added functionality. And this is completely anecdotal, and I can only speak for the Windows version, but I have had far fewer crashes with large scenarios which used to crash regularly with the older DOS version that I had. Plus, it's kind of cool to be downloading some 1.5 MB file from the local BBS and switch over to play Harpoon for a while while you wait! I can answer specific questions if anyone has any. I'm sure Alliance Interactive will respond as well. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Jan 1995 21:35:17 EST From: Derrick Kong Subject: (14) Harpoon CD (v1.5) for Mac Not having owned any previous versions, I can't really compare it very well to predecessors, but let me give a review/synopsis of the product. See below)* One manual that covers the program, battlesets, scenario editor Manual for Designer Series I Manual for Designer Series II* *At the end of the manual for Designer Series II, there are two pages headed by "Harpoon Design Series III." This is advertised nowhere on the box (and I didn't check last night in the program itself), so was a little confusing. It says that it has 48 scenarios "developed using the same databases that HDS I and HDS II used." The second page is a list of the 48 (12 for each battleset), with difficulty ratings (0=no activity, 5=massive activity) in each of 3 areas (AAW,ASuW,ASW). Other than the titles though, no other information is in the manual. When you install Harpoon, you can choose either the mininal version or large version. The min version will only put about 2 megs of stuff on your hard drive and it will load battlesets off of the CDrom. The large version puts everything on the hard drive and uses about 20 megs. The various menus look much like the PC version. The windows are in the usual places and have the usual 1x,2x,4x,8x zoom factors. The menus are also pretty much the same with a few exceptions: You can choose a refueling loadout for some aircraft (although I haven't actually gotten around to doing a refueling) now. Otherwise, I've putzed around some of the intro scenarios and play is much the same as previous versions. I'm running on a 33MHz, 68030 processor with a 13" color monitor and speed is decent (but again I haven't done the US CVBG vs multiple Backfire regiments bit yet). If there are specific questions, people should post and I'll try to answer them in future issues... The four ships: Iowa (BB 61), New Jersey (BB 62), Missouri (BB 63) and Wisconsin (BB 64) had all been decommissioned, but were maintained as part of the Navy's "mothball" fleet -- ships removed from service but maintained so they could be restored to operability if the need arose. The Navy will dispose of the ships in accordance with existing law, which allows private organizations and municipalities who qualify to obtain the vessels as memorials and museums. Several groups have already asked the Navy to consider them for this privilege. (This story appeared on Navy Wire Service as NWSA141) -USN- -USN- NNS045. Differences between Harpoon Classic 1.5 and earlier Harpoon versions. 1) Addition of a "Command Bar" giving mouse access to commonly used orders. 2) Addition on Macintosh and Windows versions of larger screen support. 3) Addition of an Harpoon Designer Series III, with 48 new scenarios. Also included are the original four BattleSets, HDS I & II for a total of over 200 scenarios. The Scenario Editor is also included. 4) Addition of the Show and Select buttons to staff dialogs to improve player situational awareness. 5) Addition of air-to-air refueling where tanker loadouts are available in the BattleSets. 6) Addition of asking you if you would like to shoot missiles at enemies within range (which are not the groups current target). 7) Addition of ability to run from the CD-ROM (approximately 2 MB of hard disk space is required). 8) Addition to several of the reports to give more information on group and unit states. 9) Addition of digitized sound drivers for over 20 sound boards to the DOS version. 7) B&W support for the Macintosh version was discontinued. 8) Bug Fixes a) Most bug fixes (over 10) were unitialized pointers within the aircraft and missile simulation code, which could cause random crashes, unexpected results and/or data garbling. Some Nukes, ARM and HARM missiles had this problem when attacking certain targets. Air attacks and dogfights also had the likelihood of causing data errors. b) There was a specific crash bug in the DOS version concerning some overhead view data (in the missile hits and shooting animations). c) There was a bug in gunfire which caused all shells to be impact instead of airburst. The current updates we offer to all Harpoon Classic owners at no charge are: Harpoon Classic DOS version 1.57 Harpoon Classic Windows version 1.53b Harpoon Classic Macintosh version 1.57 These updates are available on most commercial services (CIS, GEnie and AOL) and we encourage their distribution to internet FTP sites. I've finally put H 2 on a machine that I though would be able to handle the CPU demands of the game, a 486-33 with a 1Mb video card and 16 Mb RAM. I was running the Okinawa scenario. All was well until a few sonobouys were dropped and things started getting busy in general. The machine would not maintain a 1-1 real-time ratio! Its pretty clear to me that to really play the game with any decent user interface responce times that a !FAST! PC is required, probably at least a DX4-100. The game is harder to play, aircraft management is not nearly as friendly as with H 1, the mission assignments really foul things up sometimes, having to unassign A/C to be able to launch them on a plotted course. 360 really need to rethink missions operations. The formation editor is pretty hairy also, but still better than H 1. I did "loose" a whole squadron of Vikings to the automatic formation controller - I should be able to easily split them off from the group. The best thing about the new game is the patrol mission area assignments - being able to assign an area to a unit to search. No more micromanagment of submarine searches. I also enjoy being able to launch AA missiles myself - no more watching helplessly as a Tico, perfectly able to defend itself in theory, is knocked out by a Kingfisher since the game engine has decided to allow it. The graphics are great and the windowing is too. However, the online help needs a better way to get at a topic other than scrolling through them all, such as a letter key page selector. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Feb 1995 09:37:39 -0600 From: GEBR%mimi@magic.itg.ti.com Subject: (36) Alliance Software's Harpoon Classic for Windows A terrific product. It does slow down noticeably under Windows (what doesn't) but the improved graphics and interface are worth it. My biggest complaint is the relative positions of graphic buttons - a person can develop mouse wrist from repeatedly launching A/C. Otherwise its the same game with a few good improvements - such as the show/select features on staff messages and query prior to otherwise automatic aircraft missile launches. No more dumping all your Phoenixes on a close-by Bear when a pair of Mig-31s are rapidly approaching! The formation editor graphics have the same OLD bugs and it would be nice to be able to do manual AA control. A search region feature as in H 2 would be nice. It does play acceptably on my old 386-33! I did get a few crashes - some saved games would kill the application when loaded and I did get a couple of mid-game crashes. Well, I've successfully made the transition from the old CZ to the new. Thanks Gene for you work in setting this up! Well, I'm trying to decide if and when to spend more of my hard-earned money on new Harpoon software. Now I must also ask "which one?" I'm appealing to those of you who have purchased either HII or Classic to answer some of my questions about the improvements. Your feedback will be most helpful! Also, I'd gladly accept any response from "official" sources. 1. My biggest question is this: Has the AI (used loosely) been improved significantly? For instance, will the computer direct air attacks in other than a straight line from base to target? Is there any deception? flanking attacks? Are EMCON procedures used effectively? Will the AI manage forces efficiently by evacing a damaged base or realigning group formations to replace damaged or destroyed ships? If there has not been significant improvement over H1.3 in this area, I don't think I'll buy. 2. How does HII deal with submarine sensor data in relation to "above-water" sensors? Though a difficult task, it would be nice if locations of your own subs and their contacts were "blurred" until the sub communicated with the surface. 3. How much micro-management is needed? I ask particularly about air ops, since I'm a stickler for precise strike coordination. Currently, it takes an hour or so just to PLAN a medium-sized air strike and much work to carry it out precisely. In large scenarios (ie Desert Storm), it became impossible to manage my elements effectively. A big help would be if I could tell a group to loiter at a point and then resume their course at a given time. Can you tell ASW aircraft to patrol an area in an appropriate patrol pattern and drop sonobuoys accordingly? Do you find it possible to effectively manage battles taking place simultaneously while at great distance from each other? 4. I don't care much for all the sound effects and video, so I would assume that one can switch all of these off while playing. Am I correct? 5. I will not buy HII until they issue a scenario editor. Any news on when that will be released? 6. Is a surface group's supply situation (ammo/fuel) affected by the presence (or lack thereof) of supply ships and tankers? 7. Are weapons system breakdowns more realistic than in 1.3? Do these include A/C? Will my carrier A/C tend to break more the more intensely I use them? 8. Are satellites dealt with at all? For instance, can contacts be made by satellite overflights? I don't like being able to look at a base's "estimated" strength all the time - can you get intel reports from satellites every so often rather than always being able to check the base's status? Can you re-orient satellites to a specific threat? 9. Are there any new developments in EW? Can you visually see the effect your jamming has on enemy detection range circles? Can you switch the jammers off and on or set them in "auto" mode? I think these are the big questions I have. Again, thanks very much for your responses! Isn't the computer supposed to automatically run these patrols? If I don't mess with the Auto Formation Editor I don't have this problem. The following questions are directed towards the Harpoon boardgamers out there and their inestimable knowledge and experience. It says in the original Harpoon rulebook indirectly that the max range for visual detection of an aircraft at Med. height and below(I believe)from a surface vessel is 6nm(day)/3nm(night). Therefore my question becomes, does this answer take into account night vision capability and/or binocular usage? If not, then what is the max range? What is the max range that a submerged submarines extended periscope can visually detect an aircraft? And does this answer take into accout night vision and visual magnification capability? If a submarine has two sonars that both detect the same contact, does the sonar operator know if the two sonars contacts are the same contact or not? And if not, how does he(if ever) determine that they are the same contact? If a submarine at intermediate depth in tacturn 3 plots to change depth to either shallow or deep, does it actually acquire that depth for game purposes at the begining or end of the movement phase of tacturn 4? I'm currently running a PBeM Harpoon game with 8 players and would appreciate any info that anyone has. Especially information regarding reference material. And especially reference material directed towards the Harpoon game. Thankx in advance for the info. Radars should not be able to identify targets, although some radars eg the British Searchwater (AEW Sea King & Nimrod MR2), use some fancy signal processing which does allow them to identify their targets (and believe the minatures rules _do_ mention this). Is it possible though, that the identification of radar detected targets is based on some other means, probably ESM. Surely any computer controlled ship, when detected by radar, will turn on its own active sensors, thereby giving away a massive clue to its own identity? I can't say for sure that this is what happens, as I don't know how the game actually works these things out, but it seems a likely explanation to me. Basically you can do this through some very sophisticated digital signal processing and get a specific signal pattern for a platform, much like an acoustic signature for a ship or submarine. And, yes, this isn't in the miniatures game. Some folks on the net get very anxious when you even mention this capability, so not much is known about it. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Feb 1995 09:33:26 -0800 From: deradler@ix.netcom.com (Ed Kettler) Subject: (44) Hello Harpooners/VESA You might try UNIVESA, which is available on the net in several places. There are a couple of approaches to detecting enemy ships: passive and active. If you go active, the other guy can find you and fire down your bearing. What I try to do is form a scouting line with the ships about 10nm apart. This way I can cover a wider area, yet still concentrate quickly on a target. You may also want to have your end ships on the picket line intermittently turn their radars on. If you have a mean streak in you, you can get near one of the fishing boats, turn your radar on for 60 seconds or so, turn it off and run away. This may get the AI to fire a Harpoon, and take out the fishing boat for you. This works about 30-50% of the time. The best bet is to get away from them so they don't 'tattle' on you. Do this very quickly. As for the sprint and drift technique, this really doesn't work for ships with poor sonars. If you are spread out in a scouting line, you might get multiple bearings/probability zones, and get a triangulation if the AI's radar is on. You may want to use the 'drop track' (3 on the keypad) and see if another ship gets a passive bearing. I use reference points to mark cross bearing points and to guestimate if the target is in range. Visual range is probably not more than 18nm for the ships involved in this scenario. I have just bought the DOS version on CD, from ComputerMate in the UK [(01707) 875757], for #28. This includes not only the original game, but all four original Battlesets, the Scenario editor, plus all of the Harpoon Designer Series 1, 2 and 3. You end up with over 200 scenarios. I already had the original four and HDS1 & 2, but still thought it worthwhile. I also discovered that the CD carried the full Mac version too! (so now I can play it at work, on two machines at once!). My only regret is that I didn't buy the Windows version - going back to the original EGA graphics was quite horrible, it looks a lot better in Windows (I run at 800 x 600). I downloaded the upgrade/patch to the Windows version, and with the extra files on the DOS CD, it runs quite well. With an 8Mb machine (a 486DX-33), I can run at up to 10 minutes per second on small scenarios, probably because of the larger amount of memory available. It even runs ok in the background. I am still toying with the idea of trying Harpoon 2 (its getting quite cheap now!) - as I like playing small scenarios, they might just be possible on my machine. In conclusion, thank you Alliance for breathing life back into a great game. I can't wait for a South Atlantic Battleset! On the "full reality" difficulty setting, this does happen. Eventually, you will lose track of your subs completely. (In fact, the same is true of surface ships and aircraft, if they are too far apart to communicate by radio link.) You cannot issue orders to units which are out of communication with your designated flagship. The "blurry" region is shown as a circular region on the map indicating the area where the contact could be. > 3. How much micro-management is needed? Nope, H2 won't help you there. > Can you tell ASW aircraft to patrol an area in an appropriate > patrol pattern and drop sonobuoys accordingly? You can tell aircraft (of any type, not just ASW) to patrol in a given area. The area can be an arbitrarily shaped polygon. However, you don't have any control over the actual pattern the planes fly within the area. Sonobuoys don't seem to be used on these patrol missions, although you can drop them manually with a hot key. > Do you find it possible to > effectively manage battles taking place simultaneously while at great > distance from each other? The windows-style interface in H2 does help this. You can set up one window to show one battle area, and another window to show a different area some distance away. You can also set up windows so they track a given unit (or group). > 4. I don't care much for all the sound effects and video, so I would assume > that one can switch all of these off while playing. Theoretically, I believe it is. However, I don't think any of the scenarios contain ammunition/supply ships, and the ships never even come close to running out of fuel, so I haven't actually tried it. > 7. Are weapons system breakdowns more realistic than in 1.3? Do these > include A/C? Will my carrier A/C tend to break more the more intensely > I use them? Can you re-orient satellites to a specific threat? I've seen no evidence of satellites. The status of enemy bases is not available, although the various components of the base (hangars, runways, missile emplacements) are always known to you, and they disappear when they're destroyed. There is no provision for you to control satellites. > 9. Are there any new developments in EW? Can you visually see the effect > your jamming has on enemy detection range circles? Can you switch the > jammers off and on or set them in "auto" mode? There are no enemy detection range circles in H2. (There are also no weapon range circles for enemy units.) Whenever I tinker around with the Course pallet, I have to be extremely careful not to make a mistake (such as forget to toggle the "Enter New Leg" box before I click a point on the map). If I do make such a mistake, the game will not allow me to give commands to other groups, I can select other groups, but if I try to go into "Sensors" or such, it automatically tells me that No Active Units selected. This gets very annoying and frustrating, as I have to reload the scenario. 2. I also suffer the problem of helicopters on ASW patrol running out of gas. The computer brings back all fixed wing aircraft on formation patrol, but every know and then dumps a couple of helicopters in the drink. A bug???? Or is it because the Battle Group is moving so fast that by the time the helicopter turns around to head home, the battle group has moved out of range? 3. I still haven't been able to find the "Tanker" options for A-6's when I go to "Ready Air". Is it included in only certain scenarios? I've been playing "The Second War Between the States" HDSII and it doesn't appear to give me the tanker option. Overall, I'm very happy with the game, but the bugs are definately frustrating. I've sent my registration card to Alliance, will they send me a patch disk? If not, where can I get the patch? Best of all, after a week of learning the game and the computer kicking me around (which speaks volumes about my performance so far), I've finally refined my tactics and turned the tables. One of the best lessons I've learned so far is to TURN OFF THE RADAR! I no longer am getting swamped by waves and waves of Vampires. And playing the scenario mentioned above, I even managed to sneak a Los Angeles class sub into the heart of a CSA CVBG. In one fell swoop, I took out 90% of the escorts before the sub succumbed to a really massive antisub campaign conducted by the carrier, which I had only managed to damage. Gawd!
