I am one of those rare types who are still playing the old Harpoon (v.1.1) produced by Three-Sixty. I have all of the three Battlesets then available (GIUK, MEDC, and NACV), but never had a chance to acquire the Scenario Editor. I do not have the resources to ugrade (I'm still chopping away on a Mac Classic) so buying the more recent H versions is out. Does anyone out there know where I can get a copy of the old Scenario Editor? And were there any other Battlesets produced by Three Sixty that I have no knowledge of? Blake H. I understand that tanker loadouts are only supported by the first four battlesets - 360 built in the feature, but it was never utilized in the game. The outstanding bug that's annoying me is that you cannot set the sensors for an allied unit if the last thing you selected was an enemy unit or group - you have to click on a friendly group first. ASW aircraft when assigned to a patrol zone and mission will automatically drop sonobouys within the patrol area. Whether or not you see them depends if you have the "show sonobouys" switch turned on. The initial version of H2 didn't give you a choice. It just displayed them. The more current releases, Westpac and later, give you the option. Futhermore, A/C's on ASW patrol will RTB when they run out of sonobouys. > 4. Found you guys and am glad to find your news letter, downloaded all the V19's and am waiting for the next issue. I own versions 1.32, dos version 1.5 and windows version 1.5 and Harpoon II. I have the latest version of 1.5, 1.57a for dos and 1.53f for windows. I would be willing to post these to the net if someone would tell me where to stick them(on the computer please). IMHO the windows version is the best of the lot, it allows large scenerio's which we PC users could not use in the dos version. 1.57a for dos appears to be bug free and aircraft and ship missles seem to be very realistic. 1.53f for windows seems to still have a few bugs in it but it no longer crashs the program. My main gripe with 1.53f is that the american ship to air missle systems fire to slow and sometimes will not fire on incoming vampires. I bought both versions of 1.5 when they first came out and have reported all bugs to alliance. I want to complement them on the actions they have taken to fix all bugs reported to them. They have allways treated me with respect, answered all questions and brought out updates in a timely fasion. A "well done" to the guys at Alliance. BTW I have quite a few scenerio's I have written or modified, if anyone is intrested, which I am willing to post if someone will tell me where to post them. I want to qualify this with my view of harpoon. I cut my teeth, as a kid, on Samuel Elliot Morrisons History of the U.S. Navy in the Second World War(i still have all the volumes) and am retired from the military(7 years in the navy and 14 in the airforce). I beleive in power projection and design my scenerios with the idea of sound tactics, and how much power do I have to project to kill the enemy with minimum loss's. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Mar 1995 16:14:56 -0500 (EST) From: Rinker David Christopher Subject: (6) Best Harpoon for Mac?? I am new, both to this group and to Harpoon so please pardon my ignorance. After reading several back issues of the CZ I decided that Harpoon seemed like an appealing way to reenter the wargaming scene--its level of detail being especially attrractive. However, I am not rich and some less than glowing appraisals of HarpoonII in the CZ have prompted me to reconsider the wisdom of purchasing this particular game in April (when 360 says the mac version will be ready). So, assuming that the mac version of the game will not be greatly disimilar to the DOS version, I was hoping that some of you-all who have had experience with both Harpoon Classic and HarpoonII could comment on the respective strengths and weaknesses of each game. Do the pluses of one game outweigh the negatives of the other? Which would you recommend as a "first Harpoon?" Any responses may be e-mailed to me, and would be much appreciated. I will answer them in order. The 6 nm/3 nm day/nigh detection ranges do not take into account night vision devices. While the range qwould be increased at noight, night vision devices have smaller fields of view, depending n the type. Some also have magification as wll, which would furtther increase detection, but addition cost in field of view. We are revising the visibility rules in the upcoming fourth edition to take into account nigh-vision devices, but in the meantime extend night visibility range for ships to daytime ranges. Visibility is still reduced by any meterological effects. All modern periscopes are equipped with night-vision devices, as well as laser rangefinders. Normal visual detection rules apply for periscopes. Submarines that detect a one or two contacts on different sonars can correlate them failry quickly. If there is a convoy or several ships close togehter, it may take a while to sort out which one is which, but as sonar wuites and processing become more advanced, the time and chance of error goes down. Here is a section of the new fourth edition that deals witth submarine depth changes. 3.2.1 Depths and Depth Changes. Submarines may change depth, moving between specific depth zones. These are Surfaced, Periscope Depth, Shallow Depth, Intermediate Depth (I - IV), and Deep Depth. Intermediate Depth is divided into four zones: I, II, III, and IV. The illustration on page xxx shows the different depth zones. A submarine may change depth by plotting the desired zone as a movement order on the Log Sheet. Depending on the sub's speed, it takes several Tactical Turns to change depth from one zone to the next. The Submarine Speed/Depth Table lists the time required at each speed to change depth. SUBMARINE SPEED/DEPTH TABLE Sub Time to Speed Change Depth 1-10 knots 3 Tac Turns 11-20 knots 2 Tac Turns 21-30 knots 1 Tac Turns 31+ knots Same Tac Turn For example, a submarine at Shallow Depth may plot to move to either Periscope Depth or Intermediate Depth Zone I. At the beginning of the following Turn, it is considered to be at the new depth. Moving from Intermediate Depth Zone I to Zone IV would take three turns. Submarines can perform an Emergency Blow, which allows them to change depth as if they were moving one speed level higher. Subs moving at 31 or more knots do not benefit from an Emergency Blow since they are limited by drag on the hull from changing depth any faster. Subes performing an Emergency Blow must change depth upward at least three zones, and are Cavitating. I'm afraid I don't have any advice about PBEM techniques. Frankly, I'd be interested in hearing what you've found out. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions or comments, please let me know. ------------------------------ End CZ-L V20#1 The Convergence Zone Fri, 24 Mar 95 Volume 20 : Issue 2 "The Convergence Zone" (or just "CZ" for short) is an electronic mailing list for the discussion of the Harpoon naval wargame series and related topics. I recently picked up Harpoon II - The Official Strategy Guide by Ed Dille and Tom Basham. It's quite a hefty tome and written in the best American technothriller militarese e.g.: "The U.S. commander succeeds by keeping the MEF in passive EMCON to avoid targeting by DPRK assets." His response should help out other tabletop miniature Harpoon GM's rationalize for their players how this works. As any GM knows, rationalizing the rules(or explaining them) can be half or more than half the battle in getting some players to accept them. I also found some intresting things about the latest upgrage of Harpoon for DOS(1.57A) so I thought I'd pass the information on to those who are intrested. 1. Harpoon for DOS version 1.57a: The Phoenix missles used on the F14's do not work right. If you use them you will get slaughtered. There is a loadout for the "D" model that is called standoff which will allow you to use AIM120 which work great. If you do this be carefull as it will not allow you to put the aircraft in the formation editor as air to air but rather wants you to put them in as air to surface. When trying to attack land bases, the computer will not target TLAM's, it will target ASM's but you must target your TLAM's yourself. 2. Harpoon for Windows version 1.53I: At least they seem to have gotten rid of all the General Protection Errors. Surface to air missles do not seem to be very efective at all. Make sure your groups have plenty of air cover or the enemy missles and aircraft will break right through. Its a little unsettling to see your ships take off inland, I had one group take off from the black sea and head for the atlantic by the way of paris. When I brought this to the attention of Alliance they said that they knew that the bug exsisted but if would slow the game way down to fix it. 3. Harpoon II: Just got the upgrade of off Three Sixty's area on AOL. Boy is it ssslllooowww. I have a 486dx running at 33mhz and have not been able to finish a scenerio in one sitting (about three hours for me). They have done a good job on makeing the missles more realistic and cleaned up the interface some. The speed concerns me, on AOL there was a guy with 66mhz 486 complaining about the speed. I like this version but don't know how playable it is going to be, since the scenerio's i have played were reletively small, what happens with a big scenerio. I have reported all the bugs in the Windows and Dos verions of 1.5xx to Alliance and have received assurances that they are working to correct them. I'd get a 2x CD-ROM, and yes, it will be a big benefit for your Harpooning: both Alliance and 360/Intracorp are going that direction, as is the rest of the gaming industry. This book emphazes realism and the concepts of naval warefare to beat the game. Harpoon II illustrate the lethality of the modern naval battles and teach you the skills necessary to survive. The book explores the three classic types of naval warfare, Sea Denial, Sea Control and Power Projection. The book is plenty of Tips about War Lessons ang Game Lessons like " Submarines should attack patiently, striking violently out nowhere and then retracting. Submarines commanders must never get greedy; loitering in the combat zone risks detection and counterattack." or "A campaign of sea denial is most appropriate when you are faced with a superior adversary. Properly conducted, it can force a political resolution more favorable than the eventual military outcome or, as a minimum, delay the enemy advance log enough time to allow friendly forces to commit a more capable defense." The principles and guidelines presented in the book are as valid for another naval simulation as they are for Harpoon II. Just looking at the Table og Contents you see a Hands-On aproach to learn naval tactic in front of the computer playing the diferents Harpoon II missions. I have payed for this book US $19.95 in a software store, and I am very happy with the purchase. I red a lot of warefare books and this is okay for the price. Finally, enjoy it. Jacobs) Subject: (35) Harpoon II Upgrade WARNING It appears that the upgrade for Harpoon II released from Three Sixty has some very serious problems in it one which could cause you to lose the data on your hard disk. The first problem I found was trying to change the loadouts of the aircraft in the scenerio. If you attempt this the scenerio will continually grow until it fills all of the available ram and then "attempt" to use the hard disk as virtual memory. The hard drive will run like crazy finaly causing the program to crash. The crash is indicated by characters appearing at the top of your screen and if you hit enter they will scroll down the screen. You will have to reboot to get out. You will then find either several files in the root directory or in the temp directory that have 0 bytes in them or/and you will find a damaged "fat" and lots of lost clusters and chains. If this happens IMMEDIATLY run Norton or any of the other utilities to repair the disk or you might lose some data. Running the scenerio's without changing the loadouts on the aircraft does not seem to cause any problems. The scenerio size stays small enough(I have eight megs on my machine) to stay in memory. The other problem I have run into is running scenerio's one right after the other with out exiting Harpoon II. It appears that when you finish a scenerio, the game does not clear memory out and if you run another(sometimes a third) the system will crash. The crash will be indicated the same way as the one above and if you turn your machine off and try again it should work. Since this does not have anything to do with disk access I have had not problems with my hard disk. I have worked the three sixty area in AOL and have talked with many people who are having the same problem. For the last several weeks we have been trying to get an answer from three sixty but they are being awful quiet. To those of you who have bought Harpoon II and/or Westpac; three sixty says they are not going to package the scenerio editor seperatly. If you want it,and imho it is an absolute neccessity for the serious harpooner, you will have to buy the CD-rom version for $79.95. This means that we "loyal" harpooners will pay twice for the game and scenerio's we have already purchased. I don't think its fair and have told three sixty so, If you agree send them a message and maybe we can get them to change that policy. Reimer explains in 9 steps how to coor- dinate strikes packages to simultaneously arrive at a target. This method, like he said, is labour-intensive, but if you want the easy way ...... you must play Pac Man!. I have my own tecnique; not with an accuracy of +/- 30 seconds, but with an accuracy of +/- 1 or 2 minutes. My method doesn't have a hold point, and I will try to incorporate it in a game. Another diference is the 5 minutes lapse to form up, which is not correct. If you have a base with 3 runways is diferent from another with only one run- way, Harpoon launch one aircraft per runway every 30 seconds. I think it would be usefull to feedback our knowledge that we explain ours methodes through this magazine. 1 - Allot Forces: Assign aircraft to the mission and prepare them with the appropiate loadouts, this is important when you want to make a second and a third attack with the same planes with or without the same loadouts. 2 - Plan Fight Paths: You must decide a specifics flight paths for each group using a series of navpoints. Use as lesspoints as possible to save effort and improve precision, but remember to evade detection, enemies AAW zones and know foe air patrols. I remind you that you can use the air refueling (when you have tankers) to enhance your range. You can take off from an airport but land in another to extend range or to use these planes later in a second objetive near (or in range) of the last base. In WWII this tecnique was very used, both in the Pacific and in Europe. 3 - Calculate Flight Time: Determine the lenght of each leg of each flight path by clicking on each of the navpoints. You can use the "Calc range and Bearing" provided by Harpoon but only between bases or groups, you can't use them to calculate the flight time between any point over the group map. This is a limitation that ALIANCE should have to fix in the future to gain accuracy. With the speed rate in knots and the distance in nautic miles you can obtein the flight time using the formula: Time = Dist. / rate (Muntipling your result by 60 to get the time in minutes) Remember to substract the ordenance range from the total distance of the last leg, and don't forget to calculate the flight time of the weapon you are using. I have printed the database of Harpoon to read the velocities of the plat- forms and weapons (missiles) at diferents altitudes. 4 - Calculate Launch Time and Striking Time: Once you now the flight time of the longest leg and with the game clock showing the current game time defi- ne the H-Hour (Hour at wich they should strike the target), if you need some time between one strike and another (maybe because you attack first with ARM's for example and then with surface missiles once the radars are off or shoutdown), define this time like Delta Time. Launch Time = H-Hour + Delta - Flight Time - Time to form up For each launch time use "enter a Staff Note" that says the base from which to take off, the kind of plain and the target, (for example: Zwb -> SU-24 Anti- radar -> Abb) giving you time (10 or 15 seconds is ok) to find the base and launch the group on a patrol mission with the first navpoint as destination. 5 - Enter Flight Paths: After each group is launched, use the "group course editor" to make the course you planned out by adding each of the legs (you must place the altitude/spped orders that you had planned). Place an attack order when you want to launch your ordenance, and remember to have the landing path planned avoiding any enemy AAW zone. I have made a worksheet that has boxes for all the calculations I need to make for each group or aircraft, making the process much easier and serves as my air tasking order. I must say that I use a desktop running the Harpoon and besides a laptop running Excel 5.0 with the worksheet active. Royal Navy practice seems to be to surface underneath the fishing vessel, destroying it and killing the entire crew. There was an incident in the Irish Sea sometimes in the eighties when a RN Sub destroyed a fishing vessel which it had failed to detect whilst submerged. I believe the families of the dead fishermen are still seeking compensation. Not easy in a country where the armed forces are covered by crown immunity. This tends to demonstrate that even with modern sensors a submerged Sub is pretty blind to anything that is not making a lot of noise. My guess is the fishing vessel was drifting at the time of the collision. I don't know if the a fish finding sonar was in use. Even if it was and detected a surfacing sub it is unlikely that a drifting vessel would be able to do much about it. -- Julian Barker julian@rodent.demon.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Apr 1995 09:29:20 -0400 From: LLBond@aol.com Subject: (41) Questions Herve, radars cannot determine the height of an object unless they are spcifically designed to do so. Since stationary helicopters must hover at low altitude, they will be detected by surface search radars, and yes, it would be very difficult to distinguish a hovering helo from a stationary patrol boat. Usually, speed is the first, clue, but if they are both slow, there will be problems. Regarding contact sizes, all a player can distinguish is VSmall, Small, and Large right now. We are modifying this in the fourth edtiion, but we have not decided how much data will be available to the player. All a radar operator sees on the repeater is a blob of light, assuming he can distinguish it from the clutter and other junk on the screen. If it is a fast-moving target, or the combat system has enough automation, he will get course and speed in a few turns. For a slow-monging (ship) contact or a manual tracking system, it may take as long as three minutes. Sverker, regarding submarines and trawlers, any self-respecting sub will avoid the area if it thinks a trawler has its nets down. I have heard of several incidents in the baltic and the sea of Japan involving fishing vessels and nets. At a minimum, a sub risks embarassment and the owning country lawsuits over damaged nets and a lost catch. At wors, it may be damaged, which is always expensive. It could easliy lose its towed sonar, or have its screw fouled. A japanese trawler back in the late 1970's caught a Soviet Charlie II, entangling it so severly the sub had to surface to free itself. Not good. Fish-finders and fathometers would pick up a sub, but they are very narrow-beam and detecting a sub on one would mean that it was DIRECTLY underneath the vessel. I don't know enough about the display of a fish-finder to know if the operator would think her had the mother of all herring under him, but they are usually very high-frequency, which means higher resolution. At a minimum, the operator would get a strong, crisp echo instead of a fuzzy one. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Apr 1995 20:03:18 From: 10200@tccn.com Subject: (42) H2 Crashes Regarding Saul H. After trying to find it in the local computer stores, I give up. Anyone with information on where I can buy a copy or barter for a copy please email me. Please email me with your observations of play with Westpac. Will the next add-on after Westpac include the scenario editor and modem play? What is the release date of the next add-on? Anyone have information on the release date of the IBM version of TacOps? I have been told this is the land version of Harpoon. Any information on any version TacOps will be helpful. Jacobs) Subject: (54) Harpoon upgrades I just got Alliance's Harpoon for windows version 1.55. It looks realy good they fixed the problem with the Phoenix missles and they work just fine. The only problem I found with this version is the ineffectivness of the surface to air missles. In one of my scenerio's the surface group was unable to defeat a missle attack and in another the missles could not hit incoming aircraft. The ships now fire surface to air missles at a more realistic rate and don't quit firing as quickly as they did in the earlier version. All in all this is the best version yet. According to Rick at Three Sixty they have found the bug that does not allow myself and several others from runing the new upgrade without crashing our machines. The bad part is that he said they would not release the patch until the mulitmedia version was ready sometime in June. This is really a bummer knowing there is a fix to my problem and not being able to get it. Anybody out there having this problem contact Three Sixty and complain, lets see if we can get them to release the patch now!!! I found Three Sixty on the net thier home page can be found under the Intracorp/Capstone home page at http://www.inca.gate.net:80/~intracor/. Sean at spotter@intracorp.com is looking for ideas on what to include on the home page. Hello to all HARPOON players ! Is it possible to play harpoon on internet ? I think that for now it is not possible. But, could we try to create a computer program to handle multiplayer harpoon on internet ? I started two weeks ago to begin that task on my computer. But many questions arise ! Could we create a program which uses harpoon rules without Larry Bonds agreement and will he agree such a project. There is a big problem of synchronisation in this project. Speed will depend on network. Such a task is not easy, so help and advice will be welcome. I assume you are talking about the miniatures version? I have been involved it a couple of e-mail harpoon games. They take a LONG time to play. It is also >But, could we try to create a computer program to >handle multiplayer harpoon on internet ? >I started two weeks ago to begin that task on my computer. >But many questions arise ! I had used an excel spread sheet to track al the units. Could have used a little more automation though. If I was going to persue e-mail harpoon much more I would try to set up something more complex. >Could we create a program which uses harpoon rules >without Larry Bonds agreement and will he agree >such a project. Lary Bond has mentioned there is no plan to make refing aid, but he is allways looking for talent. The only aid I've ever seen is a HyperCard based one, but I never had the time play with it. An aid of some sort would be great to remove some if not all of the paperwork involved in the game. The Harpoon products include Harpoon, Captain's Edition Harpoon, Computer Harpoon, Harpoon SITREP, and various supplements for the print and computer versions. Naval topics are discussed in so far as they are related to the game or provide useful background. The goal of CZ is interesting discussions and material and just plain fun. Subscription ------------ The CZ is now handled by a list server. To subscribe, send a e-mail to LISTSERV@UCCVMA.UCOP.EDU with the following in the message body: subscribe CZ-L Joe User Put your name instead of Joe User or course and follow the instructions it sends you. Submissions ----------- Please send submissions and ONLY SUBMISSIONS to: CZ-L@UCCVMA.UCOP.EDU . All messages are subject to possible rejection or editing by the moderator. Rejection should be pretty rare and only occur if the subject of a message is wholly inappropriate or if the message is offensive. (Please keep flames to a minimum!) Editing should be pretty rare also. Reasons for editing include (but are not necessarily limited to) extreme length, obvious errors and really bad formatting. Any editing will be noted. Please double check your submissions for errors and try to stay within 80 characters per line. Keep the submissions coming so I have something to publish. Administration -------------- Administrative requests should be sent to "CZ-Admin@mbnet.mb.ca". Once in a while, the moderator has to do real work, so please be patient. Archives -------- After each volume is complete, it along with an index is placed on the archive sites for access by anonymous FTP. The archive sites and the path to the Harpoon directory root are given below in URL format: ftp://ftp.engrg.uwo.ca/pub/harpoon/ ftp://ftp.cs.vu.nl/pub/harpoon/ ftp://jumi.lut.fi/pub/harpoon/ The back issues of the current volume are available for anonymous ftp from: ftp://ftp.mbnet.mb.ca/pub/moreau/ They will be removed once the current volume is complete and moved to the permanent archive sites. The CZ archive is in the "CZ" subdirectory under the Harpoon directory root. The CZ archive volumes are named v1.Z, v2.Z, etc. and are in UNIX compress format (see below). The index files are named i1.Z, i2.Z, etc. A few other items appear under separate names. The complete list is in the file "INDEX". Please be polite and don't FTP during peak load hours during a workday. WWW --- There also have been some Web pages devoted to Harpoon in it's various formats. They are: http://biochem.dental.upenn.edu/Mosaic/bill/harpoon.html http://www.cyberspace.com/~dozotim http://www.mbnet.mb.ca/~moreau/harpoon.html Compression ----------- The volumes are in UNIX compress format(.Z). There are several ways to uncompress them on various platforms. UNIX - issue the following command: uncompress - you can read the man page for further instructions at your site. Macintosh - I would recommend Stuffit Expander. - Very slick drag and drop interface and supports many compression formats. Comes with instructions. - Latest version that I know of is: 3.5.4. Most likely a newer version out there some where. Check you favorite archive site. DOS/Windows - I'm not sure about this at the moment, but more to come. ------------------------------ End CZ Digest V20 #5
