Far to nice to be doing anything else other then sitting on the deck with an ice cold Corona and toasting to the commissioning of our new City Class frigate the HMCS Winnipeg - my home town if you haven't noticed. :^) Now that it's supposed to rain for a day or two I suppose I can get all the things done that I have been neglecting lately. I still haven't glued all the V20 issues together. I hope to get to it tomorrow so watch for it soon. All us Macintosh Harpooners in the audience will probably be glad to hear that Harpoon II has supposedly shipped for the Mac and my local software store says they will have it by the end of June. If it's as addictive as the original I won't get out at all this summer and start to look like a submariner. :^) Happy Hunting, Gene ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 1995 22:22:38 -0600 From: Jason Sheffield <76711.240@compuserve.com> Harpoon II Subject: (02) VAS and Harpoon II Jubel, Yes that is correct.. VAS is _very_ buggy. TSPI released it about 6 months too soon, while it was still in beta stage. They were planning on making a patch, but they went out of business. We have a second version of the game available, but it too has some bugs. We don't have the programming staff necessary to contiue the project at this time, so it has been put on hold until we can hire more Mac programmers or allocate the ones we have. What I'd like is a greater flexibility, with a chance of building your own platforms. As an example, Italy has just started receiving the AV8B+ for the Navy (take note, they are not british harriers or plain AV8B, they are the plus model) and on july 1st the Air Force will receive the first 12 Tornado ADV of the 24 that the RAF kindly lent to cover our needs until we start getting our EF-2000. Also we have 4 KC-135 (more or less...). The problem is that the ADV and the KC-135 are not present in any of the MEDC battlesets, and the Harrier II+ appears in only a few. And I have not checked the type of SMR they have put in a few of our destroyers (the Durand De La Penne obviously has Standard 2s...) Visiting my son who lives in Madison, I took my H2 with me and tried it on his 100Mhz pentium and got the same crashes I have been getting on my machine. While I was up there the new multimedia upgrade came out and I downloaded it from compuserve. When I tried to run it on my sons machine it crashed just as it had before. Upon returning to Tucson, I tried the new patch on my 486dx33 and found it crashed just as it did on my sons. Went out and bought the CD loaded it in my machine and it crashed also. Decided to up grade my machine so went and got a new motherboard with a 486dx4 100mhz and installed it in my machine and the game continued to crash. Talked several times to Sean and Rick up at three sixty and they seem to think there is (and I quote Rick), a "memory leak" in the program. Rick said they found one in the mac and fixed it. Rick requested my err.out file and an auto.sav which I will send up this weekend. For a while I thought the problem was machine specific, but now after having the problem on three different machines do not think so. I agree with Rick that it has to be how the program is handeling memory, I don't think its cleaning up after itself(not reclaiming memory after it has used it). I base this on my experience that the more memory I can free up the longer the game will run before it crashes. With my 8 megs of memory, config sys that consist of the following: device=himem.sys buffers=40 files=40 and a smartdrive of 1 meg I can get it to run for about two hours before it crashes. The above frees up about 7 megs in my machine. If I clutter memory up and reduce it to 4 to 5 megs it crashes it 15 to 30 minutes. If you are expereiencing the crashes here are some tips that work for me: 1. Free up as much memory as you can(more memory free, longer it works). 2. Start the game with harpoon2 -a(this will automaticaly save the game every 15 game cycles under the file auto.sav in harpoon2's root directory. After restarting you can reload auto.sav and continue on. 3. When it crashes do not do a warm boot(ctrl, alt, del keys or hit the reset button) this does not clear the computers memory and you will crash very quickly. Do a cold boot, turn your machine off wait a minute and then turn it on and you should be able to play for a couple more hours. 4. When you crash run chkdsk, scandisk or check to clear up lost clusters. Very often when the crash occurs it will leave filles open it was trying to use and this can cause problems when you try and rerun the game as well as eating up disk space. BTW the 486dx4 makes a heck of a difference in playing the game, no more speed problems. If you have a board that will except it, you can get the AMD chip for about $165 and if you have a clone and can replace the motherboard its only about $265. IMHO its an upgrade well worth the money. Thanks to Rick and Sean at three sixty for being so responsive to my problems and I hope they fix this soon. Hope the above info helps. In electro-Harpoon, can you define different nations to be sometimes allies and sometimes opponents? I have Harpoon on the Amiga, and I don't think it can be done there... In this version, you can set up "N" sides, and define their intentions towards the other sides: friendly, neutral or hostile. I am not familiar with a similar feature in H1.5x versions. For those folks who purchased Command at Sea/Rising Sun, version 2 rules are now available. Contact CLASHOFARMS@genie.geis.com to get the full upgrade info, but in a nutshell it is: "send in the cover of the original rules book and $9.00 and we'll send you the new rules book." While I'm on the subject, here is what is in the pipeline: 1995: Player's Handbook (all the charts in one place): March Referee's Guide (referee's hints, tips, ideas): released at Origins Supermarina (Early Med): 4Q 1996: Battleships and Biplanes (Interwar, Hector Bywater) No Sailor but a Fool (Coastal Defenses): Flag Lieutenant (Windows-based ship and aircraft database) Harpoon 4.0 miniatures rules We also have a Web page, created by Bill Armintrout at Origin Systems: http://biochem.dental.upenn.edu/Mosaic/bill/cas.html And, last but not least, I ran across a Harpoon miniatures related tool called Harpoon Data Pro 1.1. Mike ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 95 18:39:00 From: BRUCE@e.opticalres.com Subject: (50) H1 Early Scenario Walkthroughs? This is a real newbie question - sorry. I just started playing Harpoon Classic for Windows (having gotten interested in it through Larry Bond's books, and also TC/LB's _Red_Storm_Rising_). I got the CD-ROM with a zillion scenarios (great gameplay value for only $25), but I'm just getting past the mechanics of the game to the point where I can concentrate on what is actually happening, working on the original GIUK battleset. The walk-throughs of GIUK #2 (manual) and #1 (Harpoon Battle Book) were very helpful in understanding the mechanics and in getting a feel for how to approach the game (applied tactical/strategic thinking), but I really feel like I could use some additional scenario-specific help like this to really put it all together (I know this takes time and practice too, of course). Does anyone know of a source of similar walk-throughs (even bare-bones, text-only, "stream of consciousnes," whatever) for some of the other scenarios, especially ASW and CVBG? I read the FAQ and looked at a couple of the archived CZ volumes, but there's a lot to search through there. Thanks! Bruce Irving bruce@opticalres.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Aug 95 14:44:00 Subject: (51) Mac Harpoon II -- Review From: Wayne S. Rowe, wrowe@reed.edu In short, I find Harpoon II to be a significant improvement over the previous "classic" version. The only real warning flag is strong CPU demand. I would say it needs at least a 33Mz/'040 Mac to run smoothly. Running on my IIvx (33Mz/'030) the game is just manageable when all superfluous extensions are removed. I also highly recommend updating to version 1.0.1 since there is a hideous bug in 1.0.0 that will totally crash the game. In addition, the updated PowerMac version is supposed to run significantly faster. I also suggest getting the video updater as this shrinks the files' sizes, makes the clips play smoother, and improves 16-bit (thousands of) color display. I know these updates are planned to be put on Three-Sixty's web page, but last time I checked all of the stuff they had there was for the DOS version. I got my copies from America Online...(blech). If nowhere else they should be available in the Sumex and Umich archives soon. My one question is: where are there more scenarios for Harpoon II? It's my understanding that the updated version allows cross-platform scenario play. Has anyone done this, and/or know where more Harpoon II scenarios can be obtained? -=WSR=- +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Wayne S. Has anyone else noted that max fuel range in the modeling occurs at low altitude? In real life, min specific fuel consumption for all jet jet aircraft occurs at Medium to High altitudes. Of course, provided there are minimal stealth charactoristics, this is where the aircraft would be most vulnerable radar detection and consequent attack by some sams and most adversary fighters. In other words, the game player should have to make a trade off between range to target and surprise. Software logic should reward the player who flys his strike packages on a hi - low - hi profile, just like the big boys. Comments? From: bruce@east.opticalres.com It looks to me like Harpoon Classic CD is perhaps in "fire sale" mode. I recently got the WinHarpoon Classic CD for $24.95 at a MicroCenter "superstore," and this was the only place in the Boston area I found that had it. Then I noticed in Computer City that there was a $19 box of 5 mostly non-descript (to me -- "Fighter Wing" was one) military-game CDs, but Harpoon Classic was one of the 5! I didn't notice whether it was the DOS or Win version. With H2 Deluxe out on CD, the Classic product may be gone soon - a chance to pick it up cheap if you want it and can find it. I couldn't stand it on the DX2/66 or 475, just to slow for me. If you can play it on the PMac that will be much better than your SX/33. Not sure about the SX/33 and 660AV, but I would guess the Mac version would be faster if for no other reason than your 660AV has a math co-processor and that makes a noticeable difference. I can't enjoy Harpoon I as much anymore, just not real enough for me, and not enough of a challenge. IMHO go with the Mac version. (or I just can't) 3. In using the formation editor I assigned a chopper to patrol for ASW patrol. Three choppers launched, and when I turned two of them back to base, they launched again after 30 min of refuel and rearm. Why? 4. After this, I needed all three choppers, so I wanted to clear them all from assignments, but no way. How can you unassign an aircraft which is patrolling a PZ in the formation? If this is all too basic and I will find out anyway from playing longer, don't bother to answer. Otherwise, please advise!! Dear Stategy Fan, Harpoon 2 looks like the game of my dreams (real-time, sophisticated, detailed and accurate technical information), but (in the sad absence of an informed saleman) I need would appreciate any answers to the following questions before I splash out cash for it. 1) Is a colour display mandatory? I'll be installing it on a subnotebook with a 64 grey-scale display. I do NOT have an external monitor. What I'm really concerned about is whether, on a grey-scale screen, I'll be able to distinguish the bad guys from the good guys. 2) My notebook only has a 486SLC25 processor. Is this too puny? 3) I only have 4 meg of ram. Is this too annorexic? 4) I have limited space on my 40 meg hard-drive (disk-doubled to 80). Is it mandatory to install the full 25 meg of Harpoon 2? 5) Does it run from Windows? (This question has to do with my mouse-driver (which actually drives a pen, not a mouse.).) 6) Are there any other options besides buying a new computer? (ie. does Harpoon Classic or Carriers at War 2 overcome any of the above problems?) The CZ archive is in the "CZ" subdirectory under the Harpoon directory root. The CZ archive volumes are named v1.Z, v2.Z, etc. and are in UNIX compress format (see below). The index files are named i1.Z, i2.Z, etc. A few other items appear under separate names. The complete list is in the file "INDEX". Please be polite and don't FTP during peak load hours during a workday. WWW -------------- There also have been some Web pages devoted to Harpoon in it's various formats. They are: http://biochem.dental.upenn.edu/Mosaic/bill/harpoon.html http://www.cyberspace.com/~dozotim http://www.mbnet.mb.ca/~moreau/harpoon.html Compression -------------- The volumes are in UNIX compress format(.Z). There are several ways to uncompress them on various platforms. UNIX - issue the following command: uncompress - you can read the man page for further instructions at your site. Macintosh - I would recommend Stuffit Expander. - Very slick drag and drop interface and supports many compression formats. Comes with instructions. - Latest version that I know of is: 3.5.4.
