Irrelevant.  

There are 80 million lawful gun owners in the United States who are, 
apparently, overwhelmingly capable of safely and lawfully storing and 
using weapons.  The point of comparing the accidental gun death statistic 
to the accidental medical death statistic is not to excoriate doctors for 
their 0.17 deaths /per doctor per year/ (a truly shocking figure).  

It's to excoriate the media, politicians, and scaremongers who would have 
the American public believe that we need ever-increasing regulation in 
order to "save the children".

Oh, there's all sorts of ways to reckon numbers.  Please note that the 
statistic I cited didn't attempt to ascertain -cause- to anything.  The 
instant you try and use statistics to establish cause, you've left the 
realm of mathematics and entered the realm of politics.
