Well, there's the quick way to find out... check the headers of the last
message you got, and in the X-Mailing-List you'll see an archive number
(for example:

X-Mailing-List: <millenniums-end-l@firedrake.org> archive/latest/1586

)

That number is incremented by one for each message, and you can fetch
messages from the server by archive number - just send

get latest/1586

in the subject line of mail to

millenniums-end-l-request@firedrake.org

to get that message, for example.
