Well, given that elephant are usually shot from a range of between 18 m and 36 m from ambush .308 is adequate for the job if you can hit the brain or rake the thorax (although only bull elephants are in the rex range females are much smaller).

Good big game hunters can take out an elephant with a brain shot but even apparently brain shot elephant have turned out to merely stunned and have woken up, got up and wandered off while every one was congratulating themselves on the success of the hunt (I've seen one story of a bull elephant taking four .700 nitro rounds to the head at close range before dropping!).

The other thing to bear in mind is that wounded elephant usually try to get away, they are after all herbivores. A T-Rex would be more likely to react like a carnivore: locate the attacker and kill them.
