Haven't seen the movie, but there was a US weapons requirement for a rapid
fire shotgun (issued 1979). The responses to the system included the AAI
CAWS, H&K CAWS and Pancor Jackhammer. One of the issues with an automatic
shotgun is heating of the chamber, which requires either a rotating chamber
(Jackhammer) or all-brass ammunition (AAI, H&K). Plastic cased shotgun
hulls apparently had a tendency to melt into the chamber, causing extraction
failures and feed failures on the next round.

The only reason I've ever heard for cancellation of the program was "it's
too deadly". Ahem, wasn't that the point? Perhaps the next version should
come with a vase full of plastic flowers, ala the VW New Beetle.
