National/Regional preferences are likely to be the biggest factor.  If you are
in Europe, your selections would likely go HK or SIG.  Americans (as in US, not
the rest of the Americas) go AR-15/M-16/M-4.  Terrorists almost always use the
AK, even when the IRA is known for using the AR-18.  Latin America would likely
use some of their home grown weapons (some of which are very well made and of
good quality.  FAMAE SAF comes to mind immediately).

For me, as a citizen of the world, I do a good mixture of everything.  In RL, I
am trying to get a SIG 551.  I also have an FN Forty-Nine in S&W .40.  Those go
to my preferences.  Don't like the AR-15s as much as everyone else I know. 
Don't have much respect for the M1911 either.  Good design, but much better has
come out since then.  I've also always had a fondness for the 7.62x51 since I
used to own a vintage M-14.  This transferred to HK G3s.  The SAF is a good
subgun that I wish I could get a test-fire for.

My favorite lists of manufactures are SIG, HK, FN, and Glock.  The Glock comes
in a distant fourth, BTW.  Decent enough but it lacks many features that I
prefer.  Zaklady (Poland) is starting to produce some interesting designs, and
I'm keeping close tabs on them.  They make some very good quality AK rip-offs
too, in every caliber size you can think of.

Since my personal preferences push out to the characters I play, you can see
where their preferences lay too :)
