I think that Prague, Czech Republic would be a better choice then Budapest.
Czech Republic has managed to competely turn itself around from communist
rule being one of the most successful of the former eastern bloc. It is a
very historic city with a great location, modern airport and amenities. Also
a short drive to the Polish border.
