The idea was actually to be able to shoot out of trenches and foxholes (and
even AFVs) without having to stick your head over the top, not so much to
shoot around corners in street fighting (which is what most writers seem to
think they were for). It you look at the arrangement of the mirror/prism on
the barrel extension, this is pretty obvious.
