The phrase 'cheesecake' was used as early as 1946 to refer to a pin-up
photo of actress Rita Hayworth which adorned the first test bomb dropped on
Bikini atoll in the Marshall Islands in July of that year. (Source:

Cheesecake pictures were usually of scantily-clad women in provocative
poses. I haven't found the origin of this term in this usage.
In the 60s, as a part of the Equal Rights movement, publishers started to
produce comparable posters of good-looking men usually wearing just pants,
shorts or briefs. These were referred to as 'beefcake', a natural
extension of 'cheesecake'.
