Yes, gun control in the US is now a far-away fantasy. It goes with the
cowboy mentality that you're not a real man without a six-shooter at your
side.

Very well put

I can't help thinking that if the slate was wiped
clean, the US would be a much safer place if nobody
owned a firearm without 'just cause', with 'self
denfense' not being such a cause.

The major problem facing the US and gunb control seems
to be:
1) The over laise-faire gun lobby who scream that any
control infringes their god-given right to own all
manner of automatic weapons in the name of Truth,
Freedom and Blowing Away Thy Neighbor.
2) The huge number of existing firearms that would go
underground in the event of strict gun control, thus
not depriving the criminal element of firepower and
making Joe Public feel even less safe.
