If the citizens do not have arms, then they really don't have any "rights."  The government has all means of force and no government run by man will ever be perfect as bad apples will come into power (see Nazi Germany - they took all of their citizen's guns - would you refuse to join their party and risk death?).

Some days the government needs to be reminded that they are there in power for the benefit of the people they rule and not just for their own wants.  It would be foolish to believe that if all guns are taken away that peace and crime reduction will come hand in hand.
