Why not?

The press statement is non-news to everyone except Joe Public.  Everyone with an interest knew this was happening.  Taliban started watching the shadows on the 12th.

The administration wants (needs?) to show that the "War Against Terrorism" is moving to the next level.  Public opinion and confidence have to be weighed very heavily.

No operatives were put at risk!  Reread the press statement and think about it.

Sends a message to allies, advisories and fence sitters that things hard times are getting closer.  The twitchier the Taliban gets, the more they jump when you kick them in the teeth.

Morale boost to mobilizing military forces that operations have been/are/will be successfully prosecuted in bandit country.

Just another step in a complex dance.
