RE: Scopes, Sniping and Reloading: Was new life for...

One place that 300m range for 5.56/.223 came from is the original loading
for the M16 was a 55 grain bullet with a 1 in 12" twist (OK, originally 1 in
14") - the new, modern (ie, mid /80s?) is a 62 grain bullet that is longer,
and is stabilized with a 1 in 7" twist. The original load (M193) was listed
as having a maximum effective range of 300m. The later round (M855 for the
US, SS109(??) for NATO) was developed by FN to help sell the Minimi - it
need longer range, and better penetration. I believe that is what the
British IW is chambered for. (AFAIK, only the US still issues both types of
ammo - because we still have both types of rifling present in our fielded
weapons.)
