"official" german ranges (wasRe: Effective L85/6 ...)

shuffling german material instead (interesting:
"restricted-for official use only" but you can order it
in any bookshop...)

the g3 has a precise range of up to 300 m (with iron
100, 200, 300 m "ghostring"- like sights, dunno on the
g3zf scoped version), the new g36 of 500 m with
electronic/optical sights (500 m aiming mark, zeroed at
100), uzis and various pistols 50m range.
anything from 100 m on was fired lying, on shorter range
kneeling positions and rarely standing or even
hip-firing. on the usually monthly range-day any
conscript would be shooting between 15 and perhaps 40
rounds maximum in 7,62, as we had an integrated armored
platoon with uzis we got another 10 to 25 9mm rounds.
ncoīs that already had the "schützenschnur", a grey rope
on the right shoulder of the dress uniform showing you
had qualified on the usual firing range exercises, had a
bit more leeway in defining their training, but still
had to account for any fired round.

havenīt found out about the kalashnikov, which was used
in great numbers in eastern units of the reunified
bundeswehr, but i remember them to be rather
short-ranged. official east german designation was even
"maschinenpistole".

most western firing ranges are just 300m long, pop up
targets are avaiable in the last 50m area, but its more
common to shoot on 10-ring targets.

pistol, uzi and mg 3 train on 25m ranges (the latter on
a landscape picture simulating perhaps 200m) with
mannequin targets (usually cardboard). Qualifying with
pistol or uzi ment 3 out of 5 shots somewhere on three
mannequins, unlimited aiming time, any standing postion
( two hand -stances strongly encouraged). mp and some
other selected units might go to other ranges, but that
wasnīt and isnīt common for the rest of the divisional
non-combat troops.

firing ranges big enough for atr, 40 mm grenade pistol,
mg in aa mounting or handflammpatrone were visited once
a year for five days, but for various reasons usually
about 80% of the company attended the course.

by the way, most german police officers donīt get much
better training.

so i think 300 m is a very reasonable distance for a
"sniping" skill.
