thatīs the main issue now, but some things have been
decided before.
the bavarian sidearm currently issued is the p7, usually
with a 8 round magazine. this weapon is cocked and the
safety is released by just holding the front of the grip
, so releasing a shot is possible by pulling the trigger
with relative little power as soon as the p7 is drawn.
thatīs perfectly fine when you regularly train with your
gun. but officers assigned to a county police station
will usually see the police firing range every 2 to 5
months maximum, even qualifying only once a year is
legally o.k.. they are not allowed to train on a
private range with their issued weapon, even if there is
one in most villages or small towns. department approval
of such a range isnīt possible, as armed police officers
training is controlled statewide, not by the local
detachment.
And even if they wouldnīt hit the broad side of a barn,
with 35 plus years they`re officers for lifetime and a
bavarian state trooper positively carries a gun.
too often in the past years bavarian (or lower saxony,
that is. same shit happening just south of harburg city
limits) 9mm full metal jacket flew around because a
nervous officer had no real chance to handle his issued
weapon correctly.
the current evalution now has to choose between some
other perfectly fine modern technology weapons having
(in order of importance):
a) german origin (well, somehow: please donīt search for
logic when "being german" is an issue)
b) conventional safety
c) high-capacity magazine
cost is no real issue, as bavaria will get serious
discounts anyway: lower saxony has the same problem,
saxony usually follows everything big brother bavaria
does...
whatever gun gets chosen, will see some additional
sales.
so carrying comfort is the only thing left to compare.
another thing: the california highway patrol uses more
than one mustang. but as the series ran out of
production, they looked for something else (for example
with a roof stable enough to put a lightbar on it :)).
the michigan state police runs tests every year for all
law enforcement agencies to see if the cars proposed
from detroit, auburn or whereever fill standard needs
and check what typical replacement parts/repairs cost,
but every department has its own preferences.
still buying larger batches makes sense. for example
ford (america) paints every wanted colour design as soon
as you order a minimum of five identical cars, otherwise
youīre stuck to a local detailer.
the nypd ordered hundreds of prepainted and assembled
doors. thatīs cheaper and faster! than starting from
scratch every time a car is damaged.
should do for now
